Ballgreen Hall, Strathaven

In response to a post on the Strathaven Facebook Group regarding the Ballgreen Hall and the involvement of the Strathaven John Hastie Museum Trust, we would like to confirm our position.

THE Strathaven John Hastie Museum Trust (SJHMT) pursued a Community Asset Transfer (CAT) of the Ballgreen Hall in its drive to set up a museum and community facilities for Strathaven.  It was therefore disappointed to report that, despite vigorous efforts by its funding team and its consultants since July 2020, and as a result of many funds being closed or diverted to respond to the Covid 19 Emergency, the Trust was unable to identify sufficient available funding streams.

Its aim was to purchase, make safe, renovate and adapt the Ballgreen Hall and ex-Library Facility so being  unable to engage with potential funding bodies to secure confirmation of when suitable funds would be available or the likely magnitude of Grant Funding meant the plans for a community asset transfer could not proceed at that time.

Continual constructive dialogue with South Lanarkshire Council (SLC) took place throughout the CAT Process with the process being mutually paused to allow the Trust further time, in the expectation of the re-opening of Grant Funding which would have allowed Funding for the full proposal to be identified.

Regrettably, this did not occur. Consequently, the SJHMT Board of Trustees met using “Zoom” on Monday 8 February 2021 and after much deliberation unanimously decided to withdraw their CAT Application for the Ballgreen Hall and ex-Library Facility.

Andrew Park

Andrew Park passed away peacefully on Thursday, 29th of July at Avonhaugh nursing home at the age of 91. Andrew was a well known local businessman who was extremely active within the community of Strathaven.

Andrew, along with Bill Beveridge, was instrumental in pushing the local council to build a swimming pool in Strathaven having raised donations of £300k with the help of various organisations and individuals in the town. He was the Chairman of the organising committee that resurrected Strathaven Gala Day which is still enjoyed by all in Strathaven today.

Our condolences from all at Strathaven John Hastie Museum Trust go out to Lesley, Abigail and Victor at this time.

The family has asked that if you wish to make a donation in Andrew’s memory that it goes to Strathaven John Hastie Museum Trust. Please use the details below if you are able to make a donation.

New App for Strathaven helps you know Strathaven InsideOut

The Strathaven InsideOut continues to be developed and will be formally launched during May 2021.  The App was developed by the STAND Agency in conjunction with Strathaven John Hastie Museum Trust and South Lanarkshire Council following a successful bid to the 2019 Town Centre Fund by Strathaven and Glassford Community Council.

The App, which is available on the Apple Store and Google Play, works on iPhones and Android devices.  It covers all of the local businesses that have registered on the App including offers and perks available.  It also features local heritage trails and will cover events, festivals, groups and organisation across our community.

The aim is to make the App and the Discover Strathaven website at the go to places for all information about Strathaven. Strathaven Business Association has accessed funding to install lamppost banners promoting Strathaven businesses, Discover Strathaven, Scotland Loves Local and the Strathaven InsideOut App.

The App will continue to be developed with plans for more heritage trails and other useful information to be added over the next year.

Strathaven John Hastie Museum Trust encourages all businesses and local organisations to register for the App to make it as user friendly and comprehensive as possible. To register go to and follow the instructions.  Creating an account enables you to register details of your business or organisation and then to manage the content on an ongoing basis once it is loaded onto the App.

We also encourage residents and visitors to download the App to find out all that is available across our community. More and more businesses and organisations are being added to the App every month and as they update the information themselves you know it is accurate and up to date.
