John Hastie Museum Trust

When Strathaven’s local museum closed in 2011, a group of locals formed the Strathaven John Hastie Museum Trust to preserve our town’s history. None of us had museum experience, but we’ve learned as we go, benefiting from training and collaborating with other museums in the South Lanarkshire Museums Forum.

Our Trust is run by volunteers, with elected Trustees overseeing the management of our not-for-profit, charitable organisation. We’re always looking to grow our membership and invite people to join and support our work through practical help and spreading the word.

We’re passionate about telling Strathaven’s story through exhibitions and events, often featuring items from the John Hastie and Strathaven Collections, which we’re working to bring out of council storage. We also collect artefacts and personal stories from the community.

Our long-term goal is to secure a permanent building to display our collection and achieve accreditation with Museums Galleries Scotland, allowing us to offer both semi-permanent and rotating exhibitions.

Join us in preserving Strathaven’s history!
